Ágætis byrjun is the second studio album by Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós. The title is Icelandic for "A good beginning", a beautifully ironic choice given the rather poorly produced and unsuccessful debut album Von. The songs are in Icelandic, with some lines in the made-up language Hopelandic. The music is a blend of art rock, dream pop and shoegazing, with a dose of classical music to boot. This album is widely regarded as one of the highlights of the post-rock genre, and quite rightly so. There is something completely 'not out of this world' about this album, a stunning experience. My picks from the album are Starálfur (Staring Elf), Flugufrelsarinn (The Fly's Savior), Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása (Good Weather for an Airstrike), and Olsen Olsen.
