Close to the Fire is the ninth studio album by Dutch progressive rock band Kayak. Released 18 years after the previous album, this was an unexpected but very welcome comeback from my favourite Dutch pop/rock act. The original singer (Max Werner) had rejoined the band, and they put together an album that is vintage Kayak, a blend of prog, pop and rock. I actually prefer it over most of their previous work. Every song is worthwhile, although the CD bonus track, a re-recording of their hit Ruthless Queen, is rather superfluous. My favourite songs are Close To The Fire, Crusader, Anybody's Child, Here Today, Full Circle, and especially Frozen Flame.
