( ) is the third studio album from Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós. Postrock meets avant-garde on this album, which is pretentious on many levels: from the absurd title to the lack of song titles on the album, to the CD booklet consisting only blank pages, to the use of the made-up language Hopelandic throughout. And yet, it works. It is a collection of beautifully sung sad ambient soundscapes, while the classical music factor has judiciously been toned down compared to the previous album from a full symphony orchestra to a string quartet. It was a hit with the critics, and with me as well. It is difficult to single out particular favourites - this is one of those albums that just has to be taken in as a whole. Tracks 3 and 4 would be good ones to sample though.
