Deserter's Songs is the fourth studio album by alternative rock band Mercury Rev. After three promising but uneven records, this was their first masterpiece in my opinion. Melodious trippy dream pop, the unique and impressive voice of Jonathan Donahue, and sometimes bizarre instrumentation (especially the singing saw, but how effective it is!). As one critic wrote: "Deserter's Songs unlocks the beauty always hidden just below the band's surface, its lush harmonics and soothing textures bathing in an almost unearthly light." Personal favourites are Holes, Tonite It Shows, Endlessly, Opus 40, and Goddess On A Hiway.
