Between Sleep and Sorrow

With Rapid Eye Movement, Riverside complete a haunting trilogy that blurs the lines between dream and delirium, consciousness and collapse. It is a work steeped in twilight - the soft boundary between waking life and the deep recesses of the mind. The Polish quartet, already masters of emotional dynamics and psychological depth, reach new levels of introspection here, weaving a soundscape that feels both intimate and cosmic.

Where their earlier records explored isolation and identity, Rapid Eye Movement ventures further inward, into the disorienting terrain of half-remembered fears and subconscious longing. The music pulses like the rhythm of REM sleep itself - steady, hypnotic, yet charged with unseen energy. There’s a cinematic tension throughout, as if we are trapped in a lucid dream where memories mutate and truths refuse to stay still.

Mariusz Duda’s voice becomes the narrator of this descent - gentle, haunted, and entirely human. His lyrics are less statements than fragments of thought, floating through the shifting haze of Riverside’s intricate arrangements. Guitars shimmer and growl, keyboards breathe and sigh, and the rhythm section anchors the emotional turbulence with quiet precision. The production, rich but never overbearing, amplifies the band’s most essential strength: atmosphere as storytelling.

What makes Rapid Eye Movement remarkable is its emotional honesty. It’s an album about the fragile balance between awareness and escape - the seductive pull of dreams and the fear of not returning. In its most tranquil moments, it offers solace; in its most turbulent, revelation.

By the time the final notes fade, one feels suspended between two worlds: the one outside, ordinary and cold, and the one within, vast and trembling with possibility. Rapid Eye Movement is not merely music to listen to - it’s a place to inhabit, a lucid dream crafted by a band unafraid to explore the shadowed corners of the soul.

My personal view:
It is a difficult album to assess fairly, as it is in the same heavy prog style as the first two, but a step down from the stunning heights of its predecessors. On the other hand, if I just judge this album on its own, it is still one I rank as essential. Songs I'd recommend include 02 Panic Room, Schizophrenic Prayer, Through The Other Side, and especially Embryonic and Ultimate Trip.
