For the Stars is a crossover album by classically trained Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, assisted and produced by Elvis Costello. These types of albums rarely work, but this is a beautiful exception. Von Otter's beautiful voice is eminently suited for the selected songs (e.g. by McCartney, Waits, Beach Boys, ABBA) with an exquisite seven players ensemble combining classical and pop instruments in a chamber music setting. All songs are wonderful easy listening, but especially worthwhile are No Wonder, Baby Plays Around, Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder), Like An Angel Passing Through My Room, April After All, For No One, and especially Rope, and the duet with Elvis Costello, merging Tom Waits' Broken bicycles and Paul McCartney's Junk into one awesome song.
