Blackwater Park is the fifth studio album by Swedish progressive death metal band Opeth. Death metal with its growled 'vocals' is not a genre that appeals to me, and indeed, the first four Opeth albums did not come close to my list. With Blackwater Park, they created their most progressive and most appealing record. There are still death growls, but also plenty of regular singing, there is a lot of metal, but also awesome acoustic passages, and the combination simply works. The collaboration with and production by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree, No-Man, Blackfield) will have played a role in this as well. The strongest songs for me are Bleak, Harvest, The Drapery Falls, and Dirge For November.
