Nouvelle Vague
Nouvelle Vague is the debut studio album by the French lounge band Nouvelle Vague. The concept borders on the ridiculous: take a baker's dozen of eighties' new wave hits, record them in a bossa nova arrangement, sung by Brazilian and French chanteuses/models who allegedly never heard the original versions. The weirdest thing though is that it actually works: this is a great album to listen to and enjoy the covers (almost) as much as the originals. The follow-up albums also had their moments, but the first one is the one that stands out. There's also some clever wordplay here: bossa nova and nouvelle vague both mean new wave. The best songs for me are Love Will Tear Us Apart, Guns Of Brixton, This Is Not A Love Song, Too Drunk To Fuck, and especially A Forest.
