Hymns of the 49th Parallel is the sixth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter k.d. lang. It is a thematic cover album, including covers of ten famous pop/rock songs by colleague Canadian singer-songwriters, and one re-recording of her own song Simple. She covers the songs, even the most famous one, in a stunningly effective way, opting for effective instrumentation to let both the the songs and her own voice shine. Once you realize (well I did) that each cover is actually an improvement on the original, you fully appreciate how great this album is. Even better than the others: Fallen, Jericho, Hallelujah, Bird On A Wire, and especially After The Gold Rush.
